How is a host nation supposed to hold sailing events if it has no water borders?

What if the host nation happened to be Ukraine or Switzerland. How would they pull that of? Does that mean that they’ll have to find the nearest country that does border an ocean?

  1. Well now… the Olympics are awarded to a city rather than a country, so if the host city is unable to hold the sailing events I guess it doesn’t really matter if they take place in the same country or not?

The Ukraine could certainly host the sailing on the Black Sea. I’d imagine that with the possible exception of the incoming catamaran class it would be possible for a Swiss city to hold the sailing on Lake Geneva or Constance.

The cities in landlocked countries which have any chance of hosting the Olympics in the foreseeable future are all European: Geneva, Zurich, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest. All are within 300 miles of the Adriatic (and Baltic, in Prague’s case). Compare this with the ‘Moscow’ sailing which was 600 miles from the city, ‘Munich’ 500 miles, ‘Beijing’ 450 miles, etc etc.

So, erm, not a problem. I think.
